Lane splitting: the FFGM provides an update...

On January 31st, the trial of lane splitting by motorized two-wheelers in 11 departments came to an end. As the results were unfavorable, this practice is now punishable by law enforcement, since it has not been incorporated into the Highway Code.

A mixed assessment

The trial conducted between 2015 and 2020 did not satisfy the Road Safety Authority, and therefore the government. Indeed, the figures did not demonstrate a decrease in the number of accidents. There was no increase, but no improvement either. And this is what poses a problem for the legalization of this practice.

A new experiment

A second trial is planned. It would begin in June or July of this year in 12 departments if the Council of State approves the project. A working group has been established, and the FFMC and AFDM are participating jointly with the Road Safety Delegation.

What should change

Signs could be installed in areas where lane splitting is permitted. Training (included in a driver's license module) or during post-license training could be introduced.

We sincerely hope that lane splitting can be legalized, and that its practice will be regulated by training and a communication campaign in order to avoid accidents.

Until the new trial begins, the Highway Code remains the rule for all road users. Therefore, do not take unnecessary risks.
